At Farm to Schoool
Africa
We are working with schools and educators to build school farms where students learn how to grow produce and eat healthy food, nurture plants and contribute to healthy food production in their communities.
What would happen if every child in Africa had access to a school farm in which they could grow, harvest and enjoy healthy vegetables & fruits from the source?

Develop a personal connection to the natural world around them? Have the opportunity to contribute to healthy food production in their community? How would these experiences, if woven into the fabric of childhood, impact how young people relate to school and learning, to healthy food, and to their community? Is it possible that this influences their way of life, family nutrition, their career and sustenance in later years?

A School Farm can serve as an incredible classroom and an outstanding teacher for a child. In a school farm we are able to cultivate children’s love of learning, their appreciation of healthy food, and their connection to nature and community.

We want every school child in Africa to appreciate their environment, learn something of why and how plants grow; learn about nutrition and the best and surest way to learn is to grow the plants and watch them carefully.

THE SCHOOL FARM CAMPAIGN

Several years ago, the Secondary School Farm was known to be the pride of our educational system, especially in Nigeria. Students would be grouped into portions of farmland and involved in growing and harvesting healthy food for school and community consumption. And during harvest season, all students, joined by parents and the entire community, would bring their harvest together and celebrate the bountiful harvest in a grand style! And there were plenty healthy vegetables and fruits for all to eat! Our students in those days were farmers! And families were very healthy as they had access to fresh food all year round.  Students were happy to be part of the community of farmers securing the destiny of the country and producing good and healthy food for our nation. Today, the story has changed! Hardly would one find a school with a farm today.

We must bring back the school farms! We must bring back the pride and dignity of our educational system. We must bring back a system that ensures food security for Nigeria and not depend on food imports.

SEE WHAT WE ARE DOING ABOUT IT

Farm to School Africa works with schools and educators to set up school farms where students learn how to grow and eat healthy food, nurture plants and contribute to healthy food production in their communities. Currently, we are working in 5 schools reaching over 2000 students and teachers. Our students are keeping chickens, growing beans, corn and vegetables and nursing fruit trees that will benefit people and the environment.
